It sounds far-fetched, but the idea of AI affairs is starting to surface in relationship and divorce discussions.
People are increasingly turning to AI for advice, validation, and emotional support. For some spouses, that can feel surprisingly similar to an affair – not because AI replaces a person, but because it replaces connection.
The Real Issue Isn’t Artificial Intelligence
The real issue isn’t the technology.
It’s what happens when partners stop turning toward each other.
In many high-achieving marriages, life becomes consumed by careers, businesses, children, travel, and competing priorities. When communication begins to erode, people often seek understanding elsewhere. Today, that “elsewhere” may be available 24 hours a day through a screen.
AI doesn’t challenge your assumptions.
It reflects them.
Over time, that can reinforce distance in a relationship that’s already struggling.
What AI Relationships May Reveal About a Marriage
In my mediation practice, I rarely see divorce caused by a single event. More often, it’s the result of small disconnections that accumulate over years. AI isn’t creating that problem. It’s simply revealing it.
The question isn’t whether an AI relationship qualifies as an affair.
The question is why someone no longer feels comfortable having those conversations with their spouse.
Because connection rarely disappears all at once.
It gets replaced.
